As I’ve discussed, I’m on a quest to add more diversity in my book diet. I went on a quest in February to find some great romance books written by or featuring WOC. The Perfect Find is exactly what the title says. It was a perfect find for a cupcake book both written by and featuring POC.
Here’s my review of The Perfect Find.
First, here’s the blurb:
Will a forty-year-old woman with everything on the line – her high-stakes career, ticking biological clock, bank account – risk it all for an intensely lusty secret romance with the one person who could destroy her comeback, for good?
Jenna Jones, former It-girl fashion editor, is broke and desperate for a second chance. When she’s dumped by her longtime fiancé and fired from Darling magazine, she begs for a job from her old arch nemesis, Darcy Vale. The beyond-bitchy publisher of StyleZine.com, Darcy agrees to hire her rival – only because her fashion site needs a jolt from Jenna’s old school cred. But Jenna soon realizes she’s in over her head. She’s working with digital-savvy millennials half her age, has never even “Twittered,” and pretends to still be a Fashion Somebody while living a style lie (she sold her designer wardrobe to afford her sketched-out studio, and now quietly wears Walmart’s finest). Worse? The twenty-two-year-old videographer assigned to shoot her web series is driving her crazy. Wildly sexy with a smile Jenna feels in her thighs, Eric Combs is way off-limits – but almost too delicious too resist.
Written by the bestselling author of The Accidental Diva, The Perfect Find is a scandalously sexy, laugh-out-loud funny, utterly quotable saga about star-crossed love and starting over.
Why did I want to read The Perfect Find?
I wanted to read this one for two main reasons. First, I have been actively seeking out books featuring or written by WOC. When lamenting my struggle to find cupcake books in this category, a friend recommended this one and 32 Candles. I got them both from the library immediately.
Did I like The Perfect Find?
YES. I have a feeling The Perfect Find is going to make it into my top ten books this year. It’s a perfect romance.
It seriously has EVERYTHING.
Watching the romance between Jenna and Eric is a treat. Their age difference is tackled so well. And, it’s always nice to see a 40-year-old woman portrayed as something other than a bored housewife. (Housewife ennui is my absolute least favorite trope.)
The friendship between Jenna, Billie, and Elodie feels particularly real for women my age. They are honest, fun, and hilarious.
Style, beauty, decor
There’s a whole lot of fashion and style in this. It’s based in the fashion world in New York. I would totally watch The Perfect Find right after I finish the latest Desi Perkins video.
Once upon a time, as an undergrad, I loved writing papers on generational differences. But, way back in the 90s, it was all about Gen X vs. Boomers. This book takes a good look at Gen X vs. Millennials and it’s done really well.
A delightful supervillain
Darcy Vale is possibly worse than Miranda Priestly, one of the all time great cupcake book villains.
Fun secondary characters.
Carlita is a treasure, but my absolute favorite character in the book was May, Billie’s 5 year old daughter. She’s mildly obsessed with death and was described at one point as a little Wednesday Addams. This quote was one of my favorites:
Ancient Egypt is exciting. Because dead people got to be mummies. Even dead cats, if they belonged to a pharaoh. And the men wore eyeliner. I like the Moses story because it shows it’s not good manners to make people slaves, or to throw slave babies into a river filled with alligators. Manners are important.
Who else will like The Perfect Find?
If you love romances and awesome characters, you need to get this book. And for my fellow 40-year-olds, I love the way the author treats our age. There’s not a bit of housewife ennui from the characters and I’m grateful for it.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to get The Accidental Diva and stalk everything else that Tia Williams has ever written.
And, the always burning question: yes, I’d pay full price for this. It’s that good.
