I turn 40 in June. We’re doing a birthday bucket list.
Here’s the criteria that I used before creating the list:
- I have to want to participate in the activity. I’m not doing anything because people say I should want to accomplish it. 40 is going to be AWESOME and I’m not spending the time leading up to it doing stuff I don’t care about.
- Cost was definitely a consideration. Sure, I’d like to travel and stay in one of those huts in Fiji, but that’s not really in the budget right now. If something requires an investment, it is important enough to me to spend that money.
- There are no books on this list because they are getting their own list. The 40 before 40 book edition.
- A handful of the activities are very Vegas specific. I am very entrenched in my routines and I don’t often take advantage of everything our fair city has to offer. There are things I’ve wanted to do for a long time and I haven’t. Now is the perfect time to change that.
- I’m not giving myself a ton of time to get this done, so I tried to be realistic about what I can really accomplish during the time leading up to my birthday.
I’ll post periodic updates to let you know how things are going. I’m sure this will also be heavily documented on Instagram, so let’s be insta-friends if we aren’t already. (Plus, I post a lot of cat pictures, which I know is not a deterrent for anyone in the history of ever.)
The list is in alphabetical order. Explanation provided when I have thoughts to share with you.
Attend a lecture or performance – DONE
Create a perfect anthem playlist – DONE
I had one that was good, but it never got to perfect. This one will be perfect. “Fight Song,” “Don’t Stop Believin’, ” “Stronger.” So many options to refine and shuffle into the perfect order. Plus, I have to make sure that all of the Kelly Clarkson songs have other motivational filler. Otherwise, it’s just her greatest hits.
Develop a new skill – DONE
I don’t know what new skill. I always say knitting, but I have little interest and it seems like a big investment if I am not all in.
Eat from a food truck – DONE
I see them. I know they are out there. I want to try one.
Eat something new that I would never otherwise consider – DONE
I am apparently a very picky eater. I asked my husband to review this list before publishing and he insists that it be Indian food, which I strongly dislike and refuse to eat. He says I will like something called butter chicken. I am concerned about the butter due to my post-pregnancy lactose intolerance, but I’ll pop a lactase and hopefully won’t weep the entire time I eat it. (Is there even butter in it? I will investigate.)
Ride that big ferris wheel on the Strip – DONE
Find the perfect red lipstick – DONE
Frame and hang my Tiffany Liu prints – DONE
I have a bunch of beautiful prints from one of my favorite artists and they have been sitting on a shelf for years. I want to get them framed and hang them in my office.
Gallery Wall of Family Photos in our hallway – DONE
Our upstairs hallway is bare. Not one thing on the walls. I want to add a big gallery wall of family pics from past generations.
Give a $100 tip on an inexpensive meal – DONE
This one is a bigger investment, but it’s in the top five most important to me. I love random acts of kindness and surprising people.
Go apple picking – Couldn’t do. Added a new goal to replace it.
Go to an art exhibit
Go to the Hot Air Balloon Festival – DONE
Go Ziplining – DONE
Hike in Red Rock – DONE
Invest in a good blazer – DONE
It’s my understanding from years of watching What Not to Wear that I will immediately look more put together if I have a good blazer.
Learn to apply false eyelashes – DONE
I have tried this unsuccessfully for years. YEARS. If there is anything on this list that I might not get to, this is probably the most likely one.
Learn to cook 5 new dishes – IN PROCESS
I am not a good cook. I don’t enjoy cooking. I make the same five things over and over. We all hate them. And what tween hates tacos? It’s time to expand my repertoire.
Learn to use the drill – DONE
I sort of mastered hanging pictures earlier this year. I want to step up my game and use the drill next. Because then I can hang floating shelves.
Make a craft – DONE
I’m not good at crafts. I hope I don’t hot glue gun myself to something.
Make a Kiva loan – DONE
My husband didn’t know what this was, so I’ll leave the link for anyone who isn’t familiar with Kiva.
Make a rainbow cake – DONE
I like cake. I like rainbows. I can do this. I have absolutely no intention of sharing it.
Master folding a fitted sheet. DONE
Meet at least three “in the computer” friends in real life DONE
Memorize all of the presidents and vice presidents
I always say that the presidents will be my downfall on Jeopardy! It’s time to take care of that hurdle.
Memorize all of the state capitals – DONE
Another Jeopardy! related initiative.
New headshots – DONE
I’ve had these planned for a while. It will be my ultimate book nerd moment.
Paint something – DONE
Either a wall or a canvas at one of those paint night things. Our walls probably need it more.
Photobook of baby’s first and second years – DONE
Powerwash the house – Found out that I can’t do this because of stucco. Changed to have the windows professionally cleaned.
Because 40 is very adult, I should do some very responsible homeowner types of things. Also, I am not going to personally powerwash the house. I will hire someone.
Prepare a will – IN PROGRESS. GOT PROMOTED TO A LIVING TRUST.
I know. I know.
Publish an ebook – IN PROGRESS, BUT WON’T BE PUBLISHED UNTIL AFTER I TURN 40.
It’s outlined in my head.
Send a letter of appreciation to someone I admire – DONE
Also outlined in my head. And, it’s not to Kelly Clarkson. Sometimes, I try to surprise you.
Take a cooking class- DONE
Hopefully I can learn how to make one of those five dishes or the rainbow cake.
Take an etiquette class – DONE
Did you know this exists? I didn’t and I am fascinated. I want to learn how to set a fancy table with many knives and forks. Or learn to make small talk in any situation. Or how to send perfect thank you notes. Endless possibilities.
Take a public speaking class – DONE
This was added after I couldn’t go apple picking. I decided to do this to enhance my public speaking skills since there are so many speaking engagements on the calendar this year.
Visit dermatologist for a skin check – DONE
Visit the Valley of Fire – DONE
Wear each of my confidence necklaces at least once – DONE
I once read a post on The Bloggess about how Jenny wore confidence wigs. I buy big colorful necklaces for the same reason. Confidence necklaces. (This started when I began speaking at conferences.) I have a bunch that I’ve never worn and I need to.
Wear make up and nice clothes every day for a week – DONE
I dress like a fitness hobo. Yoga pants and tshirts most days. I think any motivation that I had stopped when What Not to Wear went off the air and the threat of an ambush ceased.
And the goal is to wear them all day. Not out for school drop off and then immediately change back to yoga pants when I get back to my office.
Win a prize – DONE
Preferably from a radio, but the internet will be fine. Preferably a really good prize that will make me the envy of all my peers.
