My Coupon Interview Experiment

As I discussed yesterday, I saw Extreme Couponing for the first time last week. (If you haven’t seen it, click on the link and watch some of the clips.)  I asked friends from all areas of the blog world to participate in an interview regarding groceries and coupons.  I am curious to hear what people think about coupons, depending on what their interests are.  If you want to participate, copy and paste this, link back to me and then send me your link.  I will be linking all of the answers so that we can get an idea of where people fall.

1.  Do you use coupons for groceries?

Sometimes.  I don’t go out of my way to get them.  I get Red Plum inserts in the mail and I go through them occasionally.  Smith’s also sends out coupons on a quarterly basis and some of those work.  Most of the time, the coupons simply don’t work with what we eat. I’d be really happy if they started sending me coupons for organic produce. That would rock.

2.  What is the primary source of your coupons?

The mail. I don’t get the paper. It would be such a waste of paper to get it simply for the coupons.

3.  Have you ever purchased food that you would not normally eat because you have a coupon?  Remember any examples?

I did when I tried to be a “couponer” in the past. I ended up with a lot of BBQ sauce that expired. Crap like that. Huge waste.

4.  When you grocery shop, what are the most important factors in your food choices?

I want fresh, seasonal and organic. I also want nutritious and low-calorie.  I don’t like to pay a lot, but I will pay more for organic food. I will not buy the cheapest product simply because it is on sale if it isn’t organic.

5.  Do you use reusable bags?  Why or why not?

Yes, for the green factor. My store also gives me a discount, which is nice.

6.  If you had a coupon, would you purchase a stockpile items because of the deal?

Depends on the product. Although I don’t know that I would ever get a coupon for something that I’d stockpile. I’d like a coupon for Dr. Bronner’s bar soap (the almond kind). An organic quinoa stockpile would rock my world.  If I see a scotch-brite coupon, I would stockpile their greener clean line.  I love that stuff.

7.  Do you plan your meals in advance?  What do you base your meal plan on?

I make a cauldron of soup on Sundays and that is what I eat for most of the week.  Does that count as a meal plan?  I eat oatmeal every morning for breakfast.  Creature of habit.

8.  Have you ever tried to coupon to get items for free or close to nothing?  How did it go?  Do you still coupon?

I tried.  Oh, did I try.  I stockpiled more body wash than I could ever need.  And skintimate shaving cream.  And cleaning stuff.  And then I greened the house.  It took a really long time to use that damn shaving cream.  Now, I use cream that comes in a container that I can recycle.  I also have a ton of lip balm left, but I won’t touch it because I’m no longer willing to put petroleum products on my lips.

9.  Last one – What do you blog about?  (Or, as we learned in Bloggy Bootcamp, what’s your elevator pitch?)  I blog about my quirky little life. Money, being green, trying to get fit with fibro, and I do it all with an extra dash of snark.  (You’re welcome.)

There are some organic coupons out there. When I get some I use them! Looks like you do pretty good. If I get FREE stuff that I don’t/won’t use I share them with friends and family.

The coupons I find the most are for Seventh Gen products. I buy all of our paper products in bulk through Amazon. I clean with my ionator (and we have a green cleaning service). I never find the brands we use. I have been lucky to find some coupons for Pronamel, which is my current toothpaste of choice since it doesn’t have SLS. I try to buy as much in-season organic produce as possible at Costco because it is way cheaper.
