It's time for our second giveaway. You have until Midnight (PST) on March 3, 2010 to submit your entry. For this contest, there are three prizes and new rules. First, we'll review the rules and then we'll take a look at the prizes.
Rules:
This contest is all about cocktails. So, we're having a creative cocktail party in the comments. There's just one thing: your guest of honor – ME – doesn't drink alcohol. To enter to win one of these lovely prizes, create a mocktail recipe in the comments just for me. If you think I'd like an old school mocktail, like a Shirley Temple, feel free to include that, but I want you to list the ingredients. (You don't have to put how much of each ingredient though.) Remember, no alcohol. Tell me if you want to serve it in a cocktail glass, a highball, a tumbler, etc. Is it on the rocks, frozen, warm? Is there a garnish? Get creative. But also remember who you are dealing with. I've been known to be a little bit picky and there are certain things that I cannot have in my diet… (Although for purposes of this contest, let's pretend that I can have sugar.)
Your comment must include:
1. Your favorite cocktail/mocktail
2. The recipe for the mocktail that you have created for me
3. The name of the mocktail that you have created for me (again, if it is old school, that's fine, just tell me what it is)
At the end of the contest, I will pick my three favorite mocktails and rank them. Then they will be awarded first through third prize.
Prizes:
Let's work our way up. Here's Third Prize:
Third place includes a baby cocktail shaker from Pottery Barn. The larger shaker is from parts unknown and is a little cloudy because it has been run through the dishwasher on the rare occasion that it was used. This includes the Margarita Mix CD from Pottery Barn. The jewel case has some wear. Mr. Boston's has every drink recipe on earth, but it also has a smudged, slightly imperfect cover. There is also a set of four cute modern designed dessert plates from Pier One.
Here's Second Place:
Alrighty. We've got two funky blue cocktail glasses. Two cocktail recipe books. Be warned that Atomic cocktails, while it is awesome, it has a few crinkled pages at the back that got wet. This also includes Pottery Barn's Tiki Rhythms CD. The Cocktail Shaker is yellow glass with a plastic top. It has a few scratches because I used it for display in years gone by. I do not wish to remember the exact amount, but it was not inexpensive. This includes a set of 8 dessert plates by Pottery Barn. Each includes a classic drink recipe. The basic design is pictured. Very cute.
Now for first prize.
I know! First prize kicks ass. Two very lovely cocktail glasses. Four glass stirrers from either Pier One or Pottery Barn. Two cocktail theme books by Shag (Josh Agle) for the art buffs. A copy of I Like You: Hospitality under the Influence by Amy Sedaris. A classic Pottery Barn cocktail Shaker. Welcome to Ultra-Lounge CD complete with fuzzy leopard cover. A set of 8 cocktail-themed dessert plates from pottery barn. Each plate has a small picture representing a specific drink in the center (i.e., a screwdriver, a grasshopper, etc.) and then the ingredients are written around the edge.

XXOO
To begin, I really have to win this prize. Leopard and 80′s all in one place??? I’ve just died and gone to heaven!
My favorite cocktail is something I call Mira’s Mambo Madness Mixer. I make it by the pitcher in the summer. I included the recipe in case anyone else wanted to try it. It is a cocktail party, after all!
•One container of frozen lemonade concentrate
•One container of frozen strawberries
•Malibu Coconut Rum or Malibu Mango Rum
Empty the can of lemonade concentrate in the pitcher
Refill the can with Malibu Coconut Rum (depending on the type of day you are having, you may want to do this twice!)
Fill the rest of the pitcher with water
Stir to dissolve the concentrate
Add the frozen strawberries in place of ice cubes. As they thaw, they will add a nice flavor to the lemonade!
Serve in a martini glass. This is best enjoyed on your outdoor furniture!
Make it fizzy: Use the Mango Rum instead of the Coconut Rum, and add Sprite to taste! Serve in a champagne glass. Why? Because it’s fun!
And now, my contest entry:
Mira’s “Mock”-lini:
•Pomegranate Blueberry juice
•Sparkling grape juice
•Lemon slices
Again, this is something that I make by the pitcher:
Half a bottle of pomegranate blueberry juice
Half a bottle of sparkling grape juice
Pure into a champagne glass
Garnish glass with a lemon slice
Sit back and enjoy the flavors!
(If you would like to Mocktail Mira’s Mambo Madness Mixer
•One container of frozen lemonade concentrate
•Peach Papaya Mango (Tropicana Pure makes this)
•Sprite to taste
•Fresh strawberries
Empty the can of lemonade concentrate in the pitcher
Refill the can with fruit juice (Tropicana’s can be kind of thick, so I usually only use one can)
Fill the rest of the pitcher with water and Sprite to taste
Stir to dissolve the concentrate
Serve in a martini glass garnished with strawberry
Enjoy!
“Fighting” with Southern Comfort is a cocktail from my younger days. It’s a lot like Joann’s; short & sweet. Take a pint of SC, wrap your lips around the open bottle, tip it back and pretty much guzzle. The first jolt burns like hell, but gets real easy after that.
This recipe differs from meow mix as I’d usually end up staring at Friend Ray instead of a cat. We’d go to Leanna’s and fight with SC getting our butts kicked. I can’t ever remeber either of us ever winning.
I don’t imbibe anymore because alcohol is the Hi-Speed EZ Pass lane to the gutter and eternal damnation. But if I did, that’s how I’d roll!
PS If I don’t win this one someone’s getting a time out in the trash can!
Father, your drink involves alcohol. As the rules state, I don’t drink alcohol. You didn’t make a mocktail. Therefore, I do not get a timeout in the trash can. I am simply letting you know so that you don’t try and call Brian and ask him to put me in the trash can.
Then how about this one called “Sweet Breath”. It would be a mocktail because no liquor is involved.
Friend Ed(another denizen of Leanna’s) was stationed near the DMZ during the Korean Conflict. Liquor was contraband, but packages from home always had plenty of Aqua Velva.
Fill a glass with Aqua Velva to about a half inch from the top.
Turn on the spiket water.
With a quick, sweeping motion, pass the glass through the spicket water.
Enjoy your cocktail.
He said you could literally drink yourself blind, but you’d have the sweetest breath around, hence the name “Sweet Breath”.
Now what did I win? Instead of vessels for the devil’s nector, I’d rather have Keurig K Cups.
from one frugal lawyer to another:
carbolic (high)ball mocktail: a nod to that first year contracts case we can’t forget.
serve in a highball glass.
1. chill the highball glass.
2. add ice.
3. pour ginger ale over ice.
4. add a splash of strawberry kool-aid for good measure.
5. top it off with a lemon twist for aesthetic value.
enjoy!
K this is called NOMNOMNOMOM.
Mash up raspberries. If they aren’t available fresh, use frozen ones. Add to the raspberry mash a sprinkle of sugar, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice, and a little bit of lime zest. If you smush about 1/2 c of raspberries, I’d say use 1 t of lemon juice and 1 t of lime zest. Got that? Now, put your smushy mixture into freezer trays and freeze them up. OOOH!
For your drinkypoo, take a Tom Collins glass and put in 3 or 4 smushberrycubes. Add another couple of fresh raspberries (or frozen ones if that’s all you have). Fill halfway with ginger ale and top off with Trader Joe’s Sparkling limeade. Garnish with sliced limes, chick lit, and time by the side of a pool.
Per your request:
“Here’s your damn mocktail, Danielle”
::plops down bottle of water::
Happy now.
The Southern One gets a special instant surprise prize for guessing my favorite beverage. Honestly, she works with me, so you’d think she’d have come up with this earlier. Although I don’t drink bottled. I’ll take a picture when I select the other winners. Remember, this is now extended through Friday!
I’m a big fan of cosmos:
8 oz cranberry juice
2 oz vodka
1 oz triple sec
But, since you want the mocktail version:
8 oz cranberry juice
2 oz sprite
1 Tbspoon lime juice
Take your biggest, prettiest tumbler, wet the rim, and dip it in sugar. Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice, combine gently (you don’t want your mocktail to be flat!) and pour into the glass! Garnish with a slice of lime.
Enjoy your Cosmopolitan, or your Suburban-Fab!
